At WISE Kenya, we are committed to maintaining the trust and confidence of our visitors to our website. We are not in the business of selling, renting or trading our databases with other companies and businesses for sales or marketing purposes.

In this Privacy Policy, we’ve provided detailed information on when and why we collect your personal information, how we use it, the limited conditions under which we may disclose it to others and how we keep it secure.

Types of data we collect

Website Cookies

Like most websites, the WISE Kenya website uses cookies to collect information.  Cookies are small data files that are placed on your computer or other devices (such as smart ‘phones or ‘tablets’) as you browse this website. 

They are used to ‘remember’ when your computer or device accesses our websites and collects information about browsing behaviour when you access this website via the same computer or device so that we can continue to develop and improve this website.  This includes statistical information regarding the use of our website and does not collect or record information on your name, address or other contact details.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Google Analytics

When someone visits the WISE Kenya website, we use a third-party service, Google Analytics, to collect standard internet log information and details of visitor behaviour patterns. We do this to find out things such as the number of visitors to the various parts of the site. This information is only processed in a way that does not identify anyone. We do not allow Google to make any attempt to find out the identities of those visiting our website.

Mailing Lists

As part of the sign-up process to join our mailing list, enter competitions, or request further information about a particular product, we collect personal information.

We use that information for a couple of reasons: to send you the information that you have requested, to contact you if you have a legitimate interest in our other products and services, we need to obtain or provide additional information; to check our records are right and to check every now and then that you’re satisfied.

We use Mailchimp to deliver our newsletter and email marketing campaigns. We gather statistics around email opening and clicks using industry-standard technologies to help us monitor and improve our e-newsletter.

You can unsubscribe to general mailings at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any of our emails.

Third parties

We do not rent or sell your Personal Information to anyone. We may share and disclose information (including Personal Information) about our customers in the following limited circumstances: Vendors, consultants and other service providers. We may share your information with third-party vendors, consultants and other service providers who we employ to perform tasks on our behalf.

Unless we tell you differently and you consent, our agents do not have any right to use the Personal Information we share with them beyond what is necessary to assist us.

We may also share your personal data with other companies under WISE Kenya brands if you have a legitimate interest in that product.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Disclosures for National Security or Law Enforcement

Under certain circumstances, we may be required to disclose your Personal Information in response to valid requests by public authorities, including meeting national security or law enforcement requirements.

Exhibitors and sponsors

If you choose to allow your badge to be scanned at one of our events, we may pass the information you provide to third parties. Generally, this will be via a process whereby you, as the user, visit or interact with a third party e.g. visit a stand at an exhibition, have your badge scanned or click on an asset branded and provided by a third party. If you wish to change your contact preferences with an individual exhibitor/sponsor, please follow their own unsubscribe request details. Unsubscribing with one of our products will stop that product from contacting you in the future, but not the individual third parties with whom you have interacted independently.

Links to other websites

Our website may contain links to other websites of interest. However, once you have used these links to leave our site, you should note that we do not have any control over that other website. Therefore, we cannot be responsible for the protection and privacy of any information which you provide whilst visiting such sites and such sites are not governed by this privacy statement. You should exercise caution and look at the privacy statement applicable to the website in question.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

How long do we retain your data?

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profiles. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights do you have over your data?

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we store your data

The data that we collect from you may be transferred to and stored at, a destination outside Kenya. It may also be processed by staff operating outside Kenya who works for us or for one of our suppliers. We will take all steps that are mandatory or reasonably necessary to ensure that your data is treated securely and in accordance with this privacy policy and applicable data protection laws.
